The very retro-chic Riviera Palm Springs Hotel and Spa is such a happening spot, I had to see first-hand what today’s hipster and his bride might expect if planning a destination wedding. Sinatra and the Rat Pack, Lucy and Desi and other Hollywood luminaries were once regulars, and you will feel like one of the glitterati here too.
The Riviera has undergone a design update that might be described as Liberace glitz meets the 1960’s. It is positively theatrical, with plenty of chrome and mirror and white leather creating a real sense of fun. There is a vibrating Lobby Bar with pool table below a chandelier, just waiting for someone to rack ‘em up. Outside at the pool, there are cabanas, fire pits and swaying palms to help melt the stress away. The responsive wait staff is happy to assist with your mood altering. There is a beautiful Spa just off the pool for the pre-wedding pampering.
The hotel rooms are in bungalows surrounding the pool and are spacious, with spa style bathrooms and enormous tubs for two. I can see the trail of rose petals and champagne on ice now. I observed a wedding ceremony underway from my balcony, on a beautiful lawn below. There are grand ballrooms here, but if the wedding is more intimate, reserve a section of the posh restaurant for your reception. This is a resort where formality and stuffiness are prohibited.
The creative menu in the restaurant had all of today’s expected touches. Everything I tried was well prepared and delicious. Meals on the outdoor terrace are delightful overlooking the pool. If time permits, get back to nature and hike the Indian Canyons on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. Running waterfalls and streams in the middle of the desert, who would have thought it? The swinging, groovy sixties seem like ancient history, so think of The Riviera as one amazing crib to hang, kick it and… chill. The only thing missing was Michael Buble, singing in the lounge. You’ve got the world on a string, baby! Enjoy.
